Abstract
This paper situates design criticism alongside design history and design practice as a core part of design studies. It examines the theoretical form and contemporary character of criticism, then considers how criticism produces value through interpretation, judgement, and dialogue with design practice.
The article argues for fair and reflective criticism that can operate as reconsideration and re-creation rather than simple evaluation. It also highlights design-criticism education as a means of strengthening critical awareness and supporting innovation in design.
